Offshore Wind Moving South?
North Carolina is exploring the technology
While most offshore wind development seems to be concentrated in the Northeast, the interest in the energy source seems to be expanding.
Many states further down the Eastern Seaboard have expressed interest in developing these resources and some important steps have been taken to pursue that goal. Most notably, that has occurred in Delaware and Maryland.
Soon, North Carolina is holding the first of three meetings to consider offshore nervy development.
A state panel that's advising Gov. Beverly Perdue is starting to hold three public meetings along the coast next week.
Perdue created the panel in September 2009 by executive order in response, in part, to a proposed five-year federal oil and gas leasing program for the sale of leases off the Atlantic coast.
But tidal- and especially wind-energy projects are considered more likely for development.
With development on so many fronts, the prospects seem more likely sometime over the next few years.
